Shooting - Week 13

During the shooting process my role was to shoot the video and make sure everything was in the frame. There were few problems we faced during shooting such as unexpected rain and general public invading the stake park ( location we had to shoot the video). However, we managed to come over those barriers by rescheduling time for our shooting. This was time consuming but we managed to finish it on time.
This process helped me improve on my camera ,directing and communication skills. However if I were to do this task again, I would like to improve on my leadership skills by taking in charge of the group while shooting.

week 12 -Test shooting blog - Anbish

Test shooting blog
During the test shooting we had to try different camera shots type and angle to see if it would be appropriate to use them. Also, we had to see if the composition showed what we wanted the audience to see. The purpose of this was to eliminate any problem that we may face when doing the actual shooting. This would make us confident while shooting, without getting any stress. After looking at the test shots, we decided to change the shot which did not look good according the scene to make the opening sequence even better. For the test shot we used Evelina to see how the narrative of the story flows.

Week 11 : Extra work

Week 11: Extra work and poster

In week 11, we did some extra work such as creating a poster. We created poster so that we can advertise our movie and also that more people became aware of our opening sequences. Furthermore, we made Facebook page and posted our poster and and opening sequence so that it reaches wider audience. The reason why we chose Facebook to advertise our opening sequence is because it is free and we can meet our target audience.

Week 10

Role in the group
As a group, we all had different individual strengths and weaknesses. Since I did media last year and I had the experience on taking videos so the group decided that I should be a camera man. In order to know more about my role, I had to research on how to improve my camera skills. To improve I had to watch videos on Youtube and also do a test shots so that I don't make many mistake while shooting. I think researching helped me because I leant new stuff such as white balance and how to make the camera steady.

Week 9 - Anbish

Storyboard, Script and Recce.

During week 9,  we had to do a storyboard, a script and a recce. For this we had to divide the work so everyone has something to do. For example, Evelina and me decided to do the story board, Henali and Farzin wrote a script because they were better at writing. Even though we had different tasks to do,  we all worked together to make decisions on what type of shots to use for our actual video.

My job for this task was to draw the scenes, make a storyboard and turn it into anomatic. The reason behind this was because we wanted to add music so that it creates mood and atmosphere. Furthermore, we wanted to see rough time so that opening sequences under 3 minute time mark. Also, the other reason is because we wanted to present our work in a creative way.

Week 8 - Anbish

Week 8 analysis of the film opening.

This week we had to analysis two real film opening sequences and two film opening sequences that other students had made. The film that I chose were ten things I hate about you and the perks of being a wallflower. While analysing opening sequences of these  movie i had to make sure I include; mise-en-scene, camera, editing, sound costume and the conventions. The challenging bit I found was analysis sound because I did not know the correct terminology therefore I had to go over the sound presentation. Analysing the real movie opening sequence helped understand about the convention of our chosen genre which is drama. From this I am learnt that mise-en-scene plays vital as it indicates what the genre of the movie is. By analysing student's work I have leant from the mistake they have made. For example, the opening sequence being too long.

Week 7- Anbish

Week 7 Sound

This week I learnt that sound is one of the important element  in any films. For example, sound helps to build atmosphere and mood to the audience. Also, the interesting thing I learnt was that the sounds that you hear are created by the foley artist. For example, The foot step you hear in the movie are created  by foley artist and other sounds such as door creaking are created by foley artist. Furthermore, I learned there are diegetic sounds and non diegetic sound. Diegetic sound that is coming from a source such as door creaking and foot step. Non diegetic sounds are sounds that can not be heard and one example is voice over.

Week 6

Week 6 camera log

in week 6, I learnt about different camera elements that the camera man uses while shooting. The things I learnt during this week was various types of shot types, camera movement, composition, angle of the camera. Before, I did not know camera shot type , movement and other element were all chosen to create meaning towards audience. For example, high angle may signify that the person is weak or sad. Another shallow depth of field might be used to suggest someone is important. The camera shot type were easy to understand as I was familiar with different type of shot types. However, camera movement, composition and focus were the one I struggled on.However, I think I  need to go over the booklet few times to fully understand What they are and how can I use that on my opening sequences. Learning about the  camera will be beneficial for the future as I can use it to create meaning and make it interesting to look at at the same time.

Week 5

Week 5 - Editing Techniques
In week 5, we learnt about different editing techniques and they are continuity and non continuity. The continuity editing involves shot reverse shot ,cross cutting and match on action. These shots are used to show continuity of the scene whereas non continuity edited such as montages are used to show time lapse. Moreover, we learnt about transitions such as fade, dissolve and wipe. Fade are used when a character is having a flashback.I got to practise these editing techniques while editing the opening sequence in Imovie. I found it little difficult after trying to edit in new version of Imovie but the more I use it the more I will get use to it.

Week 4- Anbish

Week 4: Mise-en-scene
During week 4, we learnt more about mise-en-scene. By learning mis-en-scene it made analysing easier and helped me answer the questions without hesitating. I learnt that Mise-en-scene is everything that is in the frame and they include lighting, composition , costume, props, makeup and camera angle. For example, low angle might be used to signify someone is powerful and the colour of the character signifies whether they are the protagonist or the antagonist. By learning Mise-en-scene it helped me to  analysis a opening sequence more in depth and develop my points further.

Week 3 -Anbish

Week 3: theories  log
In week 3, we learnt about different types of theories that we need to know for our exams. The theory we learnt about are:

Stuart hall in 1980- He believes that everything you see in a movie is encoded which means they are all chosen beforehand. There are three ways that audience can understand a media text. They are preferred reading , negotiated reading and opposition reading. Also, there are seven representation theories  which are Class, gender, regional identity, age physical ability/ disability, ethnicity and sexuality. The other theory I learnt was  the male gaze by Lura Mulvey, binary opposites by Claude levi-strasus , ideal self by Cark Rogers, narrative structure by Tzventan Todorov and stereotypes by Walter Lipmann. Learning about these theory  helped me visualise whether we can use some of these theory in our opening sequence and also why they are used to representation were included in films and TV series.

Week 2- Remake

Week 2 remake blog

In week 2 we had to create a remake of a film of any genre so that we can practice range of camera shots and angle that will be helpful in our real opening sequence. The opening sequence ,that we chose to do remake of, was Juno. The reason is because that it has variety of shots such as high angle , long shot , tracking shot and more. In this task I was a camera man and a director.I also allowed my colleague to take some shots so that they have some experience using the camera.Through out the remake I learnt a new skill which was to direct the team members. The barrier we faced was lack of organisation because we did not plan beforehand , therefore we were struggling to find a quiet place to film where there was not many cars driving by. Also, another barrier was the battery kept on running low. Luckily, one of my colleague’s house was close by so we charged the battery there. While the battery was being charged we tried to calm ourself down and looked at each shots and noted down what we had to do. Finally, we edited the remake and analysed our remake.

Week 1

preliminary log
During the preliminary process, we separated the work into 4 parts according to ability of the person. As I know Henali is good at writing, I decided her to do work that involves writing such as script. Then we decided Faisal to be one of our actor because he had more experience on acting than all of us. Also, we asked the drama department for a character that would fit the role of our character and they provided us a actress who was fun to work with. Since I have experience on how to use camera , I decided to be a camera man for this task. Finally , Vinnay was a editor because he has a Mac in his house so that he can edit the preliminary task at home. During the process I have learnt that you need to think creatively and also think out side the box to engage the viewers. This can be achieved by adding some funny elements to interest the viewers to keep watching it. Furthermore, I have learnt the rule of 180 degree and match on action, which I was able to perform in this task.Storyboard was done on Thursday after the video was shot.We did this because we had not planned or finalized our plot beforehand. This was appropriate for the situation because it was easier for me to draw what we had shot. However, Next time I would make sure that storyboard is done beforehand. Also, I helped one of my colleague by sending the format of the script so that she follows the correct layout and convention of a script. This made her job easier as all she had to do was input the script that she had made.
